Bonnets were worn as headgear only by married women on the occasion of church holidays and important family meetings. Kuyavian bonnets have a small head with embroidered bottom and a trimming around the face decorated with a ruche or a decorative lace. A typical bonnet should have one of the characteristic arrangement of motifs on the head, i.e. axio-symmetric arrangement or central arrangement. The asymmetric arrangement was less common. The stripe arrangement consisting of three rods was found on the older bonnets with a baggy head.
Bonnets embroidered on tulle were the most common in the Kuyavian region, although they were not the cheapest. White linen and cambric bonnets were also common. The most expensive were spun stitch bonnets due to the technique of their making.
